Translation is the art of failure came about as a way of investigating whether Eero Tarasti’s programmes narratif could be used as a compositional tool rather than an analytical one. The results of the investigation were not favourable, but the piece has drawn interest from a number of sources. The basic premise was to establish several structural strands that would interact in a way that generated a coherent structure. Personally I believe that superficial elements are more responsible for the sense of structure in this particular case (perhaps a subconscious contribution on my part). Whatever – it seems to go down well. If I’m honest, I’m more fascinated by people’s reactions to the piece than I am by the piece itself, which is no bad thing.
